ALL ABOUT ME
Why I Create
In a world obsessed with attaining more, when have we reached our limit? In our current era of relentless capitalist consumption, perhaps we need to rethink our actions across all spectrums of society. While petroleum consumption and climate change are prominent threats, our daily actions can create ripples of positive change at a local level. Artistic expression is not exempt to these behavioral shifts aimed at minimizing our impact on the planet. Our capitalist society has produced countless “things”, and my artistic intent lies in an attempt to reconfigure these “things” into a physical manifestation of my mind's exploration. Ultimately, harnessing a continual effort to create from a perspective of gratitude and reverence for mother nature and the materials she so lovingly provides us. My work is composed of salvaged material from the waste/recycling streams, including: cardboard, reclaimed canvas, paint, grout, wood, and beyond. This technique of reclaiming allows the materials to come together naturally, rather than being forced in a predetermined manor, constructed by a pristine artistic vision.
Bio
Justin Weiss (b. 1987, Evanston, Illinois) is a mixed media artist who works, lives and creates on the North Oregon Coast. His main objective each day is to consciously consume nature, and the aesthetic pleasures afforded by daily life. While no formal artistic training is present on his resume, life experiences and bountiful curiosity have cultivated an artistic practice built on instinct and abstract expressionism. More specifically, his desire to create was ignited by his desire to express himself artistically through the power of love. This profound connection to another human sparked a passion for creating art as a means of articulating emotions and experiences. His artistic journey has explored various mediums and modalities, driven by a commitment to sustainability. Contemporary abstract work defines his current output, with a constant push to incorporate new materials and figuration.
